I have a question for you:

What makes you feel like someone’s really listening?

Think about it.

And then…

Ask it out loud.

With your team, with your partner, with your boss, with your kids, parents, with anyone you want to move forward with…

And then listen.

Take notes.

Watch your people.

You’ll learn what each person craves—what they notice, what they need, and what they miss when trust feels bruised or broken.

Some might say eye contact. Others might say reflection. Some might want space before you speak. Others could want a follow-up later. Who knows what they’ll say.

No answers are wrong.

All of them are a map.

Because there are 3 things I’ve learned about building trust through hundreds (thousands?) of BRAVE® Conversations:

  1. The physical path to trust isn’t universal, it’s highly personal. (The neurological path, however is largely the same for us all: hence, The BRAVE Framework®).

  2. Trust is built fastest when you make your only job: to listen.

  3. Building trust accelerates when you act on what you learn from this question.

And no matter if you’re leading, coaching, partnered or parenting… you’re likely doing many of these, all at once. This is the question that unlocks the code. (It’s actually surprisingly simple! Right?)

Spoiler alert: This conversation starts the building of a shared language—what we build inside of fast moving teams all the time (what The BRAVE Framework® is designed to do). You’ll never be the same. You’re welcome.

So what makes you feel like someone’s really listening?

I’d love to know…

Yours bravely,

Elisabeth
